Dr. Tracy Lorne Smithson OBITUARY
November 20, 1953 – Septmber 8, 2025
It is with deep sadness that the family of Tracy Smithson announces his passing at age 71. He died at home in Quebec City after a brave yearlong battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn, and his 3 children: Stephanie, Sean (Yuka), and Jennifer; his sister, Debra, and a large extended family, as well as many friends and colleagues.
Tracy moved to Quebec from Calgary with his family in 1983 to take a position with the Government of Canada at the Defence Research Establishment at Valcartier, Quebec, where he worked for 31 years. He was a Spectroscopist who loved his profession and never tired of teaching others. He travelled extensively representing Canada at meetings, conferences, and trials, and he enjoyed meeting colleagues from many different countries. He will also be remembered fondly for his woodworking prowess and his passion for photography.
According to Tracy’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favourite charity.

I am very sad to learn that Tracy passed away in september. I saw him in May or June delivering maple syrop and he was relatively good. We had a good talk then. My sympathie to Marilyn and children, he is a great loss. I worked with Tracy for a few years at DRDC in 2003 to 2006. A woodworker, I talked to him about my projects and from then he embarked into this new hobby buying tools and working from his basement with his turtle. I enjoyed working with him and kept in touch afterwards bringing him some wood from his projects. He was very enthusiast when he talked about his many accomplishments and his many cameras. I will remember him. Paul Lacasse

Marilyn and family, my sincere condolences. Tracy was my mentor for 10 years and shared with me his enthusiasm for spectroscopy and experimentation. He was a major influence in my professional development for which I will always be grateful to him.

Marilyn, I’m so sorry to hear about the death of your husband. I was searching for your name because in my calendar I realized that it was your birthday yesterday, Oct 4th. I have thought of you often through the years. And you gave me such a beautiful “book” holder fo my pens & pencils when I left Québec in 1997. I lost my second husband (of 22 years) three years ago now. and my oldest son last year. I know how difficult grieving is. My sympathies to you & your family. I feel like both Bill & Theo are still with me. I don’t know if that’s any comfort to you right now. I do hope you have a spiritual tradition to help support you. 🙏❤️, Suzanne Maryeski

Marylin and family, my deepest condolences. I met Tracy early in my career and, over the years we spent together, he gave me the opportunity to push myself beyond limits, allowing us to take on some truly bold and adventurous challenges. I miss him; I will never forget him.
