It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Hans Wlasenko, aged 77, of Montreal, on Monday, July 27, 2026. He died peacefully in his sleep following a prolonged illness. Born in Hamm, Germany, he was the second son of Wasily Wlasenko and Frieda Wlasenko (née Schadereit), who predeceased him.
Hans is survived by his brothers, Wally (Emily), Karl, and Peter (Juanita); his daughters, Christina (Andre) and Angela (Ingo); his grandchildren, Claudia, Gavin, Liv, and Neena; his niece, Linda; his nephew, Alex (Clare); and his great-nibling, Am. He is also mourned by his special friend, Heather Donaldson, who brightened his days during the final year of his life.
Hans had a curious mind, a vivid imagination, and a joie de vivre that could be felt whenever he spoke, whether about history, politics, or personal experiences. He was an engaging storyteller whose versions of events often seemed larger than life, likely because of the embellishments he added to them. Nevertheless, he always found an audience eager to hear his stories, and his voice will be deeply missed.
He was also known for his appreciation of music, whether he was playing the saxophone or listening to the blues. Hans was a dreamer like no other and found joy in reading, painting, fishing, and conversing with others.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. A special thank-you is extended to the dedicated staff at CHSLD Vigi Reine Elizabeth, who cared for him over the past 20 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a food bank of your choice.
