Dr. Tracy Lorne Smithson OBITUARY
November 20, 1953 – Septmber 8, 2025

It is with deep sadness that the family of Tracy Smithson announces his passing at age 71. He died at home in Quebec City after a brave yearlong battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn, and his 3 children: Stephanie, Sean (Yuka), and Jennifer; his sister, Debra, and a large extended family, as well as many friends and colleagues.

Tracy moved to Quebec from Calgary with his family in 1983 to take a position with the Government of Canada at the Defence Research Establishment at Valcartier, Quebec, where he worked for 31 years. He was a Spectroscopist who loved his profession and never tired of teaching others. He travelled extensively representing Canada at meetings, conferences, and trials, and he enjoyed meeting colleagues from many different countries. He will also be remembered fondly for his woodworking prowess and his passion for photography.

According to Tracy’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favourite charity.

Marylin and family, my deepest condolences. I met Tracy early in my career and, over the years we spent together, he gave me the opportunity to push myself beyond limits, allowing us to take on some truly bold and adventurous challenges. I miss him; I will never forget him.
