Surrounded by the love of her family, Mrs. Francine Descarries passed away on March 12. This sudden departure leaves in mourning her husband, Robert P. Bélanger, her daughters, Annick and Pascale, her son-in-law, Guy St-Amour, as well as her grandchildren, Guillaume, Lancelot, and Sandrine.
Daughter of the late Auguste Descarries and the late Marcelle Létourneau, sister of the late Michel Descarries (the late Thérèse Landry) and the late Laurent Descarries (Lucie Leroux), she also leaves to mourn her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, André J. Bélanger and Ghyslaine Guertin, Line Bélanger (the late Maurice Sauvé), Paul Bélanger and Jocelyne Cloutier, as well as many nephews, nieces, relatives, colleagues, and faithful friends.
A renowned sociologist and pioneer of feminist sociology, a professor in the Department of Sociology at UQAM from 1986 to 2022, recipient of the Prix du Québec Marie-Andrée-Bertrand, founding member of the Institut de recherches et d’études féministes (IREF), and instigator of the Réseau québécois en études féministes (RéQEF), for which she served as scientific director, Francine Descarries remains a prominent figure in Quebec feminism. Through her research, writings, and teaching, she played a decisive role in the development of feminist studies and contributed, through her innovative work and commitment, to transforming the perspective on women’s living conditions in Quebec. She leaves behind a considerable intellectual legacy.
A celebration of her life and commitments will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at Saint-Viateur d’Outremont Church (1175 Laurier Avenue West, Outremont, Quebec, H2V 3R5). The family will be present starting at 10:00 AM to receive condolences. A reception will follow the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made through a donation to the Robert Bélanger and Francine Descarries Fund, which awards excellence scholarships to master’s or doctoral students in the Department of Sociology at UQAM whose thesis or dissertation project is within a feminist perspective.
